Same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel, NEW Day

We're changing things up for the month of October!

We've been meeting on Thursdays forever, which worked for most of us, most of the time, I think. But then there were classes, and roller derby, and other things that took over Thursday for some of us, and we wondered if we should make a change.

After getting some feedback, we've decided to try Wednesday nights for a while, and see if that works better.

Same place, Barnes & Noble on the Parkway, and same time, 7-9pm. Just a different day.

Hope to see you there!

crochet coral reef project

Here is the link to the current Lake Bonneville Coral Reef project, which is slated to be on display in October 2011. This group meets up at the Tea Grotto, in SLC, second and fourth Tuesday at 2:00PM, and first and third Thursday at 7:00PM.

See more photos on their Flickr page.

Crocheting coral is seriously easy, too! For the most basic piece, simply chain any number you like (10 is a good start), plus one for the turning chain, then (sc, inc) back along the chain, ch 1, turn, and continue in rows of (sc, inc) until you're satisfied with how it looks. Here's a pic of my first attempt, which was rather fun and easy:
I added a row or two using Fun Fur to make it extra fluffy.

You can also knit coral, but I suggest you get yourself a set of circulars with short ends, or you'll have some serious hand cramping before you're done. If curse words can be contained in a knit, this one has some seriously bad karma:
But, isn't it lovely? Pattern is here, and is very simple - you do a k1, yo repeat on the odd rows, and purl even on the even rows. Then bind off endlessly in i-cord for effect. Pretty, but painful. Although, now that I have some nice, short-ended circulars, I may try it again.

If anyone wants to make some coral to add to this project, I'd be happy to organize a collection and drop-off of completed coral.

yarn bomb photo dump

Errr, some of these are mega-blurry - sorry about that. I have no flash, so in low light, you have to hold super-still (or use a tripod - which I don't have either). We'll take more pics later and re-post.

Woodbury Installation

(Sorry some of these are blurry - I don't have a flash, it was a little dim, and I didn't hold still quite long enough.)

Getting Ready for Friday

The Woodbury Art Museum at the University Mall will be opening an exhibit called Hidden Voices, about urban art/graffiti. As part of that exhibit, FF will be yarn bombing benches, chairs, maybe even a desk. We'll see how ambitious we get. Just wanted to invite whomever is interested to this. The exhibit runs from January 21st to March 3rd, I think. We may have other tricks up our sleeves as well, so stay posted!

Article from November

I wanted to include the article from November that the Daily Herald did of the group, front page, Close Up section. It's not bad. That's for sure.

Here it is: Women Bound By Yarn.

Welcome to Fabulous Fibers

This is a Utah County, Utah knitting/crocheting what-have you group that originated in August 2009 as a place to knit when the local yarn store shut for the night at 6. We meet on Thursdays at the Barnes and Noble Cafe in Orem, Utah. Our first night we had between twelve and fifteen people, some coming and going as the night went on. The first meeting was held at the F-Stop Cafe. Due to hour changes, we moved to various other locations (including one week at the Wells Fargo Building in Provo, and about two or three weeks at Borders Books and Music in Provo) before settling on the Barnes and Noble Cafe. We have been meeting here since October or November 2009.

At the present, there are 40 members on the e-mailing list and between seven to ten that show up regularly. We are an open group and like people. So long as you are old enough to hold hooks/needles and not get injured doing so, feel free to swing by.

The group is free. For the most part, I figure that materials (bring your own or there are occasionally yarn swaps) and gas cost more than enough and I don't want to deal with whatever tax items would be necessary to charge people for the privilege of doing what they love anyway, so I don't.

Dress is whatever you would feel comfortable in within a bookstore. I've come in sweats and T-shirts or even Sunday clothes depending upon what else I was doing before/after. Frequently, members (what we call anyone who comes more than once or is on the e-mail list) come in jeans, skirts, or dress slacks. Feel free to be comfy.

If you need or want food, that's why we're in the cafe, in part. Good lighting, decently-comfortable chairs for the two hours or so that we're there each week, move-able furniture to scale up to however many chairs we need, open till 10PM, and free. If there were a better location, we would consider it, but this suits the needs of the group for the present.

Anyone who joins the mailing list is welcome to become an author of this blog if they want, and all are welcome to "Follow" it on any service that they wish. If you want us to follow your blog, let us know and we'll choose. Open invitation for all members to list their blogs here if they wish.
